Nigeria: Authorities Deploy Additional Forces to Maiduguri, Borno State

3000 extra police deployed to the University of Maiduguri

Nigerian authorities have deployed an additional 3,000 police officers to the University of Maiduguri in Borno State, after several policewomen went missing in the area on 9 July. Criticism has emerged over the lack of security measures at and around the university, since 19 students have been killed there this year in Boko Haram suicide attacks.

At least one security officer was killed and three others injured, after three suicide bombers detonated their explosives in three separate locations at the University of Maiduguri campus in Borno State, during the evening between 25-26 June. Boko Haram are known to operate in this region. The university has become one of the major targets of Boko Haram since it came under its first direct attack In January. About four suicide attacks have been executed within and around the university since then.

Those operating or residing in Nigeria are advised to be aware of the high threat of kidnap and to avoid all travel to Borno, where Boko Haram are known to operate. If you do decide to travel, remain on high alert and monitor local media for additional security information.
