A spokesperson for the Department of State services has announced that Nigerian security forces foiled an alleged terror plot by an Islamic State (IS)-linked Boko Haram faction, who were planning to target the US and UK Embassies in Abuja. Five persons were arrested during late March 2017 on suspicion of terror-related offences and over plans to strike the two consulates in the capital Abuja. Police commented that the terror cell had ‘perfected plans’ to carry out at attacks and to target other western interests. On 5 April, the State Department issued an updated travel warning for Nigeria, warning that Boko Haram has targeted government installations and other venues in the past in the Federal Capital Territory and elsewhere.
Those operating or residing in Nigeria are advised to be aware of the risks involved with travelling in the country. Avoid all but essential travel to Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Kano, and Yobe states because the security situation in northeast Nigeria remains fluid and unpredictable. Due to the risk of kidnappings, robberies and other armed attacks, is also advised to avoid all but essential travel to the states of Bayelsa, Delta, Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto and Zamfara. Maintain a high degree of vigilance in any areas where large crowds start to gather.
