On 23 August, Nigerian police fired tear gas to disperse a crowd of protesters who were burning tyres whilst gathered around Eliozu Bridge in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The protesters were marching against ritual killings and the police handling of ongoing investigations. No injuries or arrests were immediately reported. Police and authorities indicated that they intervened early on in order to prevent violent groups from joining the protest.
Those operating or residing in Port Harcourt are advised to be aware of further possible related protests in the near term. Avoid all protests on an ongoing basis, due to the credible risk of violence.
