Nigeria: Unidentified Gunmen Kidnap Bus Passengers Near Port Harcourt

At least 16 people kidnapped near Port Harcourt

At least 16 people have been kidnapped after a group of unidentified gunmen stopped the bus they were travelling on before forcing them to enter the nearby countryside in the Emohua area, near Port Harcourt in Rivers State on 7 August. The motive behind the kidnapping was not immediately clear and no group has claimed responsibility for the kidnappings.

In May 2017, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) issued updated travel advice to advise that they have received reports to suggest that Boko Haram is actively planning to kidnap western foreigners who are working in Bama Local Government Area of Borno state, along the Kumshe-Banki axis. If you are working in areas where there is a Boko Haram presence, especially in the north-east of Nigeria, you should be alive to the potential risk of kidnapping as a means by the terrorist group to raise funds. Military operations against Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa (ISWA) are ongoing but both groups remain a threat to security in the region.

Those operating or residing in Nigeria are advised to be aware of the high threat of kidnap and to avoid all travel to Borno, where Boko Haram are known to operate. If you do decide to travel, remain on high alert and monitor local media for additional security information.
