North Korea/United States: Pyongyang Threaten ‘Merciless Retaliation’
North Korea threaten merciless retaliation and unsparing punishment’ on the US
On 22 August, North Korea threatened ‘merciless retaliation’ as the United States (US) begun annual US-South Korean military drills. Pyongyang has claimed that the drills are a rehearsal for an invasion and included lethal weapon drills which were training troops to behead Kim Jong-un. North Korea's military routinely responds to US-South Korean exercises. Pyongyang’s military statement said that they will launch an unspecified ‘merciless retaliation and unsparing punishment’ on the US over the Ulchi Freedom Guardian drills that began Monday and which will run for 11 days. The drills are largely computer-simulated war games which are held every summer and have drawn furious responses from North Korea. This year's exercise involves 17,500 American troops and 50,000 South Korean soldiers.
