North/South Korea/Japan/US: South Korea Launched Interceptor Rockets

Tensions escalate with North Korea following another launch and threats

South Korea launched interceptor rockets which have been built to down North Korean missiles, hours after Kim Jong-un issued a threat to the US, claiming he could hit New York. Kim Jong-un said that their second flight test of an intercontinental ballistic missile demonstrated that they could reach the US mainland. The intercontinental ballistic missile landed in the Sea of Japan in the Japanese Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the launch showed the threat to Japan was “grave and real”. He added that there was a need for Japan, the US, South Korea, China and Russia to increase pressure on North Korea over its missile programme. In response to the launch and threats, South Korea and the US united forces to fire their anti-missile defence system, which would be deployed should Kim Jong-un attempt to fire a nuclear weapon over the Pacific.

It is advisable to be aware of escalating tensions with North Korea, who have made numerous threats in the past weeks. South Korea has said that they would quadruple the reward they will pay for North Korean defectors who will share information which will help enhance security. President Trump has vowed to “take all necessary steps” to ensure the security of the US and its allies.
