Pakistan: US Department of State Issues Updated Travel Warning

US Department of State advises against all non-essential travel in Pakistan

On 24 May, the US Department of State issued an updated travel warning for Pakistan, advising against all non-essential travel within the country. Consular services provided by the American Embassy in Islamabad, the Consulate General in Karachi and the Consulate General in Lahore are often limited due to the poor security environment. At this time, the Consulate General in Peshawar is not providing consular services. Pakistan experiences significantly high levels of terrorism and attacks are often aimed at government officials, humanitarian and non-governmental organisation (NGO) employees, tribal elders and law enforcement personnel. Both Islamic State and the Pakistani Taliban are known to have a presence in the country.

Those operating or residing in Pakistan are advised to maintain a heightened sense of security and to take the appropriate measures to enhance their personal security at all times, due to the serious threat of kidnapping and terrorist violence in the country. Be aware of the potential for both indiscriminate and planned coordinated terror attacks to take place. Take particular care when in proximity to areas populated with westerners.
