Papua New Guinea: FCO Issues Updated Travel Advice

Be aware of rising post-election tensions

On 31 July, the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) issued updated travel advice for Papua New Guinea. “Post-election protests are worsening in Mount Hagen with reports of unrest and destruction of property. The airport remains closed to all flights and the main roads in and out of Mount Hagen are blocked. Security forces are working to bring the situation under control. You should continue to exercise a high degree of caution around political activities, follow instructions issued and local authorities and monitor local media for the latest developments.”

Those operating or residing in Papua New Guinea are advised to be aware of escalating post-election tensions. Reconfirm all flight schedules with booking agents or airline representatives before setting out. Monitor local media for more information concerning any further transport cancellations and follow all directives issued by local authorities.
