The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's Smartraveller service has issued updated travel advice to warn that “A teachers' strike is affecting Cuzco and has led to blockages of train access to Machu Picchu, Poroy and Ollantaytambo. Monitor the media and follow the advice of local authorities. The level of the advice has not changed. Exercise a high degree of caution in Peru.” The customer service desk for the British-owned PeruRail company said service was being suspended Wednesday and Thursday because of the protest by local residents demanding that the government reverse its cancellation of a planned new airport.
Those planning to visit Machu Picchu in Peru should be aware of the current suspension of rail travel to the site due to protesting. Contact your local travel company or provider for more information concerning travel in the region.
