Peru: US Department of State Issues Updated Travel Warning

State of emergency still in effect after extreme flooding in Peru

The US Department of State has issued an updated travel alert for Peru, warning travellers and citizens of the damage caused by recent flooding and landslides across the country. A state of emergency is still in effect. The heavy rains have resulted in extensive damage to homes, water supplies, schools, hospitals, roads and bridges in several regions. Over 1.1 million people were affected by the floods and approximately 46,000 remain in camps and shelters. There has also been an increase in the number of cases of mosquito-borne diseases, such as Dengue and Zika, with a spike also being recorded in the number of Leptospirosis and other diarrheal diseases. However, the city of Cusco and the archaeological site of Machu Picchu have not been affected and the coastal areas south of Lima have returned to normal.

Those operating or residing in Peru are advised to be aware of the post-flood environment. Be aware of ongoing road repairs across the country. Travel to affected areas may be delayed and dangerous due to poor road conditions. Visit the CDC website for more information about protecting yourself against disease. Confirm with any hotels that the sanitation systems are operational and that clean drinking water is available.
