Philippines: Fighters Killed by Military as Siege Continues in Marawi

548 militants, 122 soldiers and 45 civilians killed so far in the conflict in Marawi

Filipino military forces have killed at least nine Abu Sayyaf and Islamic State linked fighters, as they continue their offensives against the armed group in Marawi. “Those enemies who died in the offensives include men of Abu Sayyaf leader Isnilon Hapilon who are digging for a tunnel under a mosque trying to escape the battle zone or reach the lake.” The siege in Marawi is now in its 12th week. 548 militants, 122 soldiers and 45 civilians are said to have been killed in the conflict so far. President Rodrigo Duterte declared martial law on the whole island of Mindanao until the end of 2017, after the Maute group attacked Marawi on 23 May. The armed conflict has displaced about 359,680 people, as of 29 July, with many living in host communities or in the 75 evacuation centres across Mindanao.

The violence in Marawi began in May when the army failed to capture Isnilon Hapilon, believed to be the main leader of IS in the Philippines. Hapilion is also linked to the local Maute group, who have declared their allegiance to IS. In response to the failed capture attempt, the group attacked and seized parts of the city, leading President Duterte to declare martial law. The Philippine military, using armed forces and helicopter airstrikes, have retaken many areas, but others remain in rebel hands. The seizure of Marawi by hundreds of fighters who have sworn allegiance to Islamic State, including dozens from neighbouring countries and the Middle East, has fuelled concern that the radical extremist group is gaining a foothold in Southeast Asia.

Those operating or residing in the Philippines are advised to be aware of ongoing violent clashes between IS militants and Filipino security forces. Avoid all travel to Marawi and other areas where fighting is rife. Contract a reliable local security escort for purposes of business and critical travel.
