Philippines: Islamic State Militants School Siege Ends

300 militants storm school

Earlier this morning, around 300 pro-Islamic State militants, the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), attacked a school in North Cobato in the southern Filipino Mindanao. The militants took several students hostage. Local media reports indicated that the military engaged with the militants and the attackers withdrew from the area, without causing any casualties or taking any hostages. However, firefights have been reported in the area and further violence is likely as security forces pursue militants.

Whilst Islamic State linked-ASG do not have a heavy presence in large mainland cities, such as Manila, the ISIS aligned terrorist group operate with some force on islands off the mainland Philippines, patrolling Filipino waters and kidnapping people for ransom. The areas of Mindanao, the Sulu Archipelago and the Zamboanga Peninsula are all considered to be extremely dangerous and travellers are advised not to go there. Currently, hundreds of civilians remain trapped in Marawi, after militants allied to Islamic State (IS) took control of the city in May/June 2017. Marawi is the capital and largest city of the province of Lanao del Sur on the island of Mindanao.

Those operating or residing in the Philippines are advised to be aware of ongoing violent clashes between IS militants and Filipino security forces. Avoid all travel to Marawi, Mindanao and other areas where fighting is rife. Contract a reliable local security escort for purposes of business and critical travel.
