On 19 April, at least one member of the militant Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) was killed, with 34 others detained, in a large military operation in Barangay Danag of Patikul municipality in the Sulu Province. There has been a recent escalation in violent clashes between the group and security personnel, as the government sets out to clamp down on the illegal activities of the group, which often involve the kidnappings and murders of civilians.
Those operating or residing in the Philippines are advised to be aware of the heightened threat of kidnap in the country and around the waters off the mainland. Defer all non-essential travel to the Sulu archipelago, including to the major islands of Basilan and Jolo, due to the threat of kidnapping and extreme violence. Contract a reliable local security escort for purposes of business and critical travel.
