Philippines: US Forces Helping to End IS Siege in Marawi

US forces join the AFP to tackle IS militants in Marawi

US special forces are helping the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to end an Islamic State siege in the town of Marawi. Currently, hundreds of civilians remain trapped there, after militants allied to Islamic State (IS) took control of the city in May/June 2017. Fighting between IS militants and police forces has left over 170 dead. The violence in Marawi began last month when the army failed to capture Isnilon Hapilon, believed to be the main leader of IS in the Philippines. Hapilion is also linked to the local Maute group, who have declared their allegiance to IS. In response to the failed capture attempt, the group attacked and seized parts of the city, leading President Duterte to declare martial law. The Philippine military, using armed forces and helicopter airstrikes, have retaken many areas, but others remain in rebel hands. The seizure of Marawi by hundreds of fighters who have sworn allegiance to Islamic State, including dozens from neighbouring countries and the Middle East, has fuelled concern that the radical extremist group is gaining a foothold in Southeast Asia.

Those operating or residing in the Philippines are advised to be aware of ongoing violent clashes between IS militants and Filipino security forces. Avoid all travel to Marawi and other areas where fighting is rife. Contract a reliable local security escort for purposes of business and critical travel.
