Following a US sanctions bill, President Putin has announced that 775 US diplomats have been expelled from Russia, cutting the US diplomatic of 1200 by more than half. The new US sanctions were in part a response to conclusions by US intelligence agencies that Russia meddled in the 2016 US presidential election and to further punish Russia for its annexation of Crimea in 2014. On 28 July, Russia ordered the US to cut hundreds of diplomatic staff and said it would seize two US diplomatic properties after the US House of Representatives and the Senate approved new sanctions on Russia. Russia has further stated that the US has until 1 September to reduce their number of diplomatic staff to 445, matching the number of Russian diplomatic staff in the US.
US citizens operating or residing in Russia are advised to be aware of worsening relations between the two countries, which could have further implications for diplomatic staff and US travellers. Tensions between the countries have been strained after the Kremlin was accused of meddling in the US Presidential election and conflicting stances in Syria.
