On 23 June, Saudi Arabian authorities claimed to have foiled a terrorist attack against the Grand Mosque in Mecca, after a suicide bomber blew himself up as security forces surrounded him inside a building in the central Mecca neighbourhood of Ajyad al-Masafi, near the mosque, that had been used as the base for the attack. Following the blast, the building collapsed, injuring 11 people. Five other suspected militants were detained and taken into custody. The attacks were allegedly planned by three terrorist groups based in Mecca and Jeddah, though it is not yet certain who was behind the plots. Since late 2014, Saudi Arabia has faced periodic bombings and shootings claimed by the Islamic State jihadist group.
Visitors to Saudi Arabia are advised to maintain a low profile, vary routines and immediately report any suspicious packages, behaviour or activity to the authorities. IS militants are known to operate in Saudi Arabia and have carried out a series of bombings and shootings in the country since 2014.
