Senegal: Incumbent Macky Sall Wins Election
On 28 February, Senegal’s National Vote Counting Commission announced Macky Sall as the official winner of the recent presidential election, securing 58% of votes cast. Opposition candidates Idrissa Seck and Ousmane Sonko received 21% and 16% respectively. Candidates have 72 hours to file an appeal with the Constitutional Court, with opposition leaders rejecting reports of Sall’s majority win.
Political demonstrations are possible in Dakar and other Senegalese cities over the coming days. Heightened security measures should be expected near any possible demonstration sites. Clashes between supporters of different political parties are possible should tensions escalate.
