On 3 September, al-Shabaab militants claimed responsibility for an attack on a military base near Somalia's southern port city of Kismayu. Although official numbers have not been released, the al-Qaeda-aligned terrorist group claimed to have killed at least 26 Somali military soldiers. The group left the base after taking weapons, ammunition and several vehicles.
Those operating or residing in Somalia are advised to proceed with extreme caution. Al-Shabaab and other Islamic extremists frequently carry out attacks here. Attacks are generally directed at security force checkpoints, government buildings, police stations and hotels. Exercise particular caution in and around these areas and report any suspicious packages, behaviour or activity to the authorities.
