South Africa: At Least 60 Killed on East Coast
Heavy rains which have been ongoing since 22 April have triggered serious flooding and mudslides along South Africa's eastern coast, killing at least 60 people. South Africa’s President, Cyril Ramaphosa, has promised emergency funding for demolished buildings ahead of a national election, as residents’ question South Africa's poor infrastructure. Several buildings have collapsed, and roads are damaged, leading to road closures and associated traffic disruptions. Power outages have also reported in several areas with power lines down.
Residents or travellers are warned to prepare for possible further flooding in the near term. Rearrange any travel routes to avoid the worst affected areas. Monitor local media for more information regarding the flooding. Follow all directives issued by the authorities and maintain a flexible itinerary until the floods pass.
