South Africa: Avoid Large Protests in Johannesburg on 15 May
US Consulate advised of planned protests in Johannesburg
The US Consulate General in Johannesburg has released a security message to advise all those in the city to avoid the planned protest on 15 May, which is taking place in the Johannesburg Central Business District. The City of Johannesburg has issued a permit for 5,000 participants and the march is planned to take place from 08:00-16:00 local time. Disruptions to motor vehicle traffic are expected in the vicinity of the demonstration throughout the day.
Those operating or residing in Johannesburg are advised to anticipate heightened security and related traffic disruptions throughout the day as protests take place. Plot your travel route to bypass the area and allow additional time for travel if this is not possible. Avoid all large gatherings due to the credible threat of protest-related violence. Seek safe shelter if tensions further escalate.
