South Africa: Planned Protest in Durban on 8 October
A landless peoples' movement, the Abahali base Mjondolo, are planning to stage a protest in Durban 8 October to denounce alleged violence against its members by the South African authorities. Protesters are expected to gather at Curries Fountain and march to City Hall from 1200 local time onwards. Members of the National Union of Metal Workers of South Africa (NUMSA) and the South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) are also expected to attend the march. Solidarity protests may be held in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
Expect an increased security presence and the associated disruptions to overland travel for the around the march route. Avoid travel to townships and high density/low economic areas without an experienced guide or local contact. Review your personal security plans and remain aware of your surroundings. Exercise caution when travelling in rural areas.
