South Africa: Rising Tensions as Zuma Vows to Take Back Land from White South Africans

Tensions rise as South African President vows to take back land

As violent clashes become more frequent amid rising tensions in South Africa, President Zuma has vowed to take back land from white South Africans. In front of a crowd of more than 20,000 people, he warned the white population that he was coming for their land, implying that it would be legal as they broke the law first by stealing the land initially. Zuma had earlier announced to the South African parliament that he planned to introduce a new law that would allow land seizures to go ahead without compensation, saying all blacks should unite to ‘take back the land’. There are roughly four million white South Africans of the total 50 million South African population.

Those operating or residing in South Africa are advised to be aware of heightened tensions in the country. Further violent protesting and looting should not be ruled out. Avoid travelling to townships without an experienced guide. Avoid all large gatherings of people and leave the vicinity if tensions further escalate into violence.
