South Africa: US Consulate Issues Security Message
Planned demonstrations for 7,8 August
On 3 August, the US Consulate General in Cape Town issued a security message which read, "The U.S. Consulate in Cape Town would like to inform all citizens of demonstrations scheduled for Monday, August 7, and Tuesday, August 8, in Cape Town’s city centre. On August 7, #UnitedBehind has called for a demonstration from 2:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., to march from Keizergracht to Parliament via Buitenkant Street. On August 8, two demonstrations have been approved. The African National Congress has called for a march starting at 9:00 a.m., going from Grand Parade to Plein Street to the corner of Plein and Roeland Streets. The Democratic Alliance has called for a march starting at 9:00 a.m., going from Keizergracht via Buitenkant Street to assemble at St. Johns and Roeland Street. Routes may be fluid, and we advise citizens to anticipate congestion throughout the city centre. Citizens are reminded that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings or protests."
