On 14 April, a garbage dump collapsed and buried dozens of houses in Colombo in Sri Lanka. The 300-foot-high (90-metre) dump in the Meethotamulla area on the border of the commercial heart of Colombo collapsed after flames engulfed it late on Friday night. A huge rescue mission was launched but hopes are now fading for the survival of hundreds of those who were buried during the accident. An estimated 100 people are trapped under the mud and debris. The known death toll has reached over 30 but emergency services and police fear this number is much high.
Those operating or residing in Colombo are advised to avoid all travel to the Meethotamulla area whilst rescue operations are underway. The area is not deemed safe for access and hundreds of houses are still buried under the landslide. Follow local media for up to date developments regarding the death toll from the disaster.
