Heightened security amid annual Jewish pilgrimage to the Ghriba synagogue
The annual Jewish pilgrimage to the Ghriba synagogue on the island of Djerba is taking place between 12-15 May 2017. Expect a heightened security presence and be vigilant during this period. Tunisia is currently operating under a state of emergency, following a terrorist suicide attack on a police bus in November 2015. The country has extended the state of emergency several times, most recently on 16 February 2017. Security forces are continuously uncovering terrorist cells and detaining those suspected of planning to carry out an attack.
Those operating or residing in Tunisia are advised to be aware of heightened security in place for the Jewish pilgrimage between 12-15 May. Be aware of the threat of terrorism. Exercise a high degree of caution near government and military buildings and personnel. Report any suspicious packages, behaviour or activity to the authorities and remain vigilant.
