Turkey: Anniversary of Attempted Coup on 15 July

Avoid all major gatherings during the 11-16 July commemorative ceremonies

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has issued updated travel advice to warn of the upcoming anniversary of the 15 July coup in Turkey. “There will be commemorative events that are likely to attract large crowds and cause traffic disruption; on 15 July 2017, significant traffic disruption is expected around the first Bosphorus bridge in Istanbul; overnight the focus of ceremonies will be in Kizilay Square in Ankara; during the weekend other events will be held in towns and cities around Turkey; take extra care if you're near any of these events and follow the advice of the local authorities.”

Those operating or residing in Turkey are advised to be aware that there a number of terror groups, primarily linked to extremist Islamist or Kurdish elements, who are active and carry out attacks in the country. Due to the symbolic significance of the day, terrorist groups may look to carry out attacks on 15 July. Exercise a high degree of caution and avoid loitering near to security forces, as they are often the target of such attacks. Report any suspicious packages, behaviour or activity to the authorities and remain vigilant.

Despite the heavy police presence in Ankara, Istanbul and other major cities, those operating or residing in Turkey are advised to avoid all major gatherings during the 11-16 July commemorative ceremonies. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence and result in detention by security forces.
