Turkey: Erdogan Claims Victory in Turkish Referendum

Violent clashes likely following Erdogan's victory in the referendum

Following the referendum on 16 April, President Erdogan has claimed victory that has granted him new powers. Supporters of the President have said that the new system which will replace the parliamentary system with an executive presidency, will help to modernise the country. Some of the constitutional changes will see Erdogan being able to directly appoint top public officials, the removal of the job of a prime minister, presidential powers to intervene in the judiciary and the power of the president to impose states of emergency. The two main oppositional parties are challenging the results.

Those operating or residing in Turkey are advised to be aware of escalating tensions amid the results of the referendum which could see President Erdogan remain in power until 2029. Three people were shot dead near a polling station in the south-eastern province of Diyarbakir, reportedly during a dispute over how they were voting. Further protests and violent clashes are highly likely in the near term. Avoid all large crowds and seek shelter at the first signs of unrest in major cities and urban hubs.
