The US Embassy in Ankara has issued a security message to advise that Turkey is planning to celebrate International Workers’ Day on 1 May. Typically, on this day political parties, labour unions and other non-governmental organisations will stage large rallies and marches in public squares and urban hubs throughout the country. In the past, such gatherings have created security and traffic build-ups in cities, with public transport services being delayed and cancelled. Following Erdogan’s continued crackdown, there will likely be an increased security presence in Istanbul and Ankara.
Those operating or residing in Turkey are advised to be aware of possible disruptions to travel throughout 1 May. Reroute all travel to avoid large cities during this time and contact public transport companies to see if services will be running. Avoid all large gatherings of people due to the credible risk of protest related violence and detention by security forces.
