Turkey: Heightened Security as Anzac Commemorations Commence in Gallipoli
Observed annually on 25 April, Anzac Day is a national memorial holiday in Australia and New Zealand that commemorates all Australians and New Zealanders who have served and died in war. Commemorative events are planned to take place in the Gallipoli peninsula, Canakkale province. On 22 April, Turkish security forces arrested a man suspected of planning an attack targeting Anzac Day commemorations. The suspect is reportedly linked to the Islamic State (IS) and the alleged attack was planned in retaliation for the mass shooting at mosques in Christchurch in New Zealand 15 March. A heightened security presence is expected around all memorial sites following his arrest. Report any suspicious packages, behaviour or activity to the authorities and remain vigilant throughout the day.
