Turkey: Hundreds Face Judges in Turkey’s Biggest Post-Coup Trial
486 set to face trial in Turkey
486 people are set to appear in court in Ankara as Turkey holds the largest trial so far over the July 2016 coup attempt. The suspects are accused of conspiring to overthrow the government last year. The courtroom, which has been purpose built, will see people charged with crimes ranging from murder, violating the constitution and attempting to kill President Erdogan. 461 suspects are being held in custody and 7 are still on the run. The remainder are charged but not in jail. Fethullah Gulen, the US-based Muslim cleric accused of ordering the attempted July coup attempt, is among the main suspects named in the indictment.
Those operating or residing in Turkey are advised to be aware of the current political climate and of heightened tensions amid a prolonged crackdown. Further purges of the police, judiciary and police are likely to continue. Limit your exposure to military installations and government buildings and refrain from discussing politics in public spaces.
