Turkey: Small Explosion Near NATO Facility in Izmir

Minor damage and no injuries following small explosion

On 22 June at 0800 LT, a small explosion was reported at a graveyard located near a NATO facility in Izmir’s Gultepe district. The blast caused minor property damage, but no injuries or casualties. The cause of the blast is not yet known. Investigations are ongoing. TAK, PKK and Islamic State (IS)-linked elements are known to operate in Izmir and have previously carried out attacks in the coastal city. In January 2017, Kurdish militants claimed responsibility for a car bombing attack on a checkpoint outside of a courthouse in Izmir, in which 4 people were killed, including two of the attackers. In April 2017, 19 suspected IS members, including 9 Syrian nationals, were detained in counter-terror raids in Izmir.

Those operating or residing in Izmir are advised to anticipate increased security in Izmir in the near-term. Further Turkish military operations and PKK attacks across south-eastern and eastern provinces are likely to continue. Report any suspicious packages, behaviour or activity to the authorities and remain vigilant.
