United States/North Korea: Pyongyang Launches Sixth Nuclear Missile Test
"Any threat to the United States or its territories - including Guam - or our allies will be met with a massive military response, a response both effective and overwhelming." - James Mattis
Following a sixth nuclear missile test launch by North Korea, Pentagon Chief James Mattis has said that “any threat to the United States or its territories - including Guam - or our allies will be met with a massive military response, a response both effective and overwhelming.” This was followed with Mattis commenting that the US does not seek the total annihilation of North Korea, but had plenty of options to do so. The statements came after North Korea announced they had successfully trialled a hydrogen bomb that could be loaded on to a long-range missile. South Korea's weather agency has said that the artificial earthquake caused by the explosion was five times to six times stronger than tremors generated by the North's previous five tests.
Early this morning, South Korea carried out a missile drill designed to "strongly warn" North Korea. The military training involved long-range air-to-surface missiles and ballistic missiles. The UN Security Council is due to hold a meeting today, to discuss the international response to Kim Jong-un.
