Venezuela: Continued Civil Unrest and Violence in Venezuela

Civil unrest and violent protests continue, particularly in Caracas

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's Smartraveller service has issued updated travel advice to advise that “Elections for the new constituent assembly were held on 30 July 2017. Civil unrest and violent protests continue, particularly in Caracas, with security forces out in strength since 23 July 2017. The Canadian Embassy, which provides consular support to Australians, has drawn down its staff, and moved to an appointment only service, limiting assistance in the event of an emergency. Avianca Airlines announced the suspension of flights to and from Venezuela as of 27 July 2017 and some other airlines have temporarily suspended flights.  Other airlines are still operating, but could withdraw services at any time. Outbound flights have limited capacity. The level of the advice has not changed. Reconsider your need to travel to Venezuela. Higher levels still apply in some parts of the country.”

Those operating or residing in Venezuela are advised to be aware the country is in a deep political and economic crisis. There have been almost daily protests against Maduro’s government since 1 April and over 73 people have been killed in protest-related violence. Avoid all large protests and gatherings of people, due to the credible risk of detention and protest-related violence. Seek shelter if tensions begin to escalate. Reroute your plans to avoid travelling within Caracas in the near term.
