Venezuela: Soldiers Arrested After Trying to Launch an Uprising

2 killed, 8 captured and 1 injured in military attack

A number of military soldiers have been arrested in Venezuela, after they attempted to launch an uprising against President Maduro. Two people were killed, eight captured and another badly wounded when an attack was launched against military barracks in Valencia in the north-western Carabobo state. A video released on social media showed uniformed men saying they were rising against a "murderous tyranny". The leader of the movement stated, “This is not a coup but a military and civil action to re-establish constitutional order.” The president alleges the attack was "paid for" by anti-government leaders based in Miami and Colombia.

The attack in Paramacay comes two days after government allies inaugurated a new legislative super body that the opposition and dozens of countries denounced as a power grab by President Nicolas Maduro.

Those operating or residing in Venezuela are advised to be aware the country is in a deep political and economic crisis. There have been almost daily protests against Maduro’s government since 1 April and over 100 people have been killed in protest-related violence. Avoid all large protests and gatherings of people, due to the credible risk of detention and protest-related violence. Seek shelter if tensions begin to escalate. Reroute your plans to avoid travelling within Caracas in the near term.
