With the Summer Monsoon in swing, Somali pirate activity is expected to remain at a low level until late September when more favourable weather conditions return to the shores of Somalia. Until this time, the primary security concern for ship owners and operators in the Indian Ocean region will be the civil war in Yemen and its impact on the southern Red Sea and Bab el Mandeb Strait. This narrow waterway has witnessed “daylight attacks by small boats using small arms, rocket propelled grenades, and Waterborne Improvised Explosive Devices (WBIED)”, in addition to naval mine laying and anti-ship ballistic missile launches. Increased insecurity in the Red Sea has prompted the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) to issue updated guidelines for merchant vessels transiting the region:
