Brazil: Police Kill Gang Members During Operation in Rio de Janeiro

At least three criminal suspects were killed whilst four others were wounded, in a police operation following a pre-dawn attack by gang members on a police outpost in the Complexo de Alemao favela in Rio de Janeiro’s Zona Norte, on 4 May. The authorities recovered several firearms, hand grenades and an unknown quantity of illegal narcotics from the deceased gang members.
Avoid travelling and self-driving through the industrial zones and satellite low-income areas in Rio de Janeiro, as gangs are known to operate and control these areas. Murder, kidnap, extortion and violence is common in gang-held territory and violent clashes take place frequently with security forces. Exercise caution when travelling in Rio and avoid loitering in or near favelas.
