The health minister of Burundi has announced that the country has declared an epidemic of Malaria, citing a 13% increase in cases since 2016. The areas worst affected are the northern provinces of Kirundo, Muyinga and the eastern provinces of Kayanza and Cankuzo. At least 3,700 people are said to have died from Malaria since the beginning of 2016.
Those operating or residing in Burundi are advised to consult medical professionals about the use of antimalarial drugs prior to travel. Take measures to avoid being bitten, including using insect repellent and bed nets.
