Central African Republic: 30 Civilians Killed in Ongoing Clashes

30 killed in Gambo amid continued violence

At least 30 civilians have been killed, including six Red Cross volunteers, in ongoing violent clashes in the Central African Republic (CAR). The violence took place late last week in the town of Gambo, which is about 75 kilometres from Bangassou. The town has been a flashpoint for violence amid the upsurge of bloodshed in the chaotic country. The deaths of the Red Cross volunteers, who were attending a crisis meeting at a health facility, mark the third such attacks on the Red Cross this year. Local authorities have blamed the fighting in Gambo on a Muslim rebel group known as Seleka or UPC. Although the CAR has 12,000 UN peacekeepers, none are currently stationed in Gambo and were not present for the bout of violence last week. The diamond-rich, poverty-stricken nation has been in crisis since late 2012, when violence broke out between Muslim and Christian armed groups. A peace deal signed by the government and 13 armed groups in June was followed by renewed fighting.

It is advisable to avoid all non-essential travel within the Central African Republic, due to ongoing violent clashes and endemic instability. Contract a security escort if you do decide to travel and remain vigilant at all times.
