Colombia: Explosion Kills 26 Policemen at Bullfighting Event

Explosion Kills 26 Policemen at Bullfighting Event

Over the past few weeks, hundreds of people have taken to the streets in the Colombian capital to protest against the return of bullfighting in the city. Bogota hosted its first bullfight in four years earlier this month, prompting animal rights protests which resulted in violence. In continued outrage, on 19 February, at least 26 policemen and four civilians were injured when an explosive was detonated on the corner of Carrera 5 and Calle 32 in Bogota’s La Macarena district, amid a heavy police presence due to a bullfighting event. Police suspect that the National Liberation Army (ELN) was behind the attack. Further protests and attacks are likely to take place.

Those who plan to travel to or within Bogota are advised to be aware of the recent attack aimed at policemen safeguarding a bullfighting event and of violent clashes between the two-opposing side. Avoid any large gatherings of people, protests and demonstrations. Report any suspicious packages, behaviour or activity to the authorities and remain vigilant.
