Cote d’Ivoire: Gunfire Heard in Adiake, Prompting Fears of a Fresh Mutiny

Gunfire in Adiake sparks fears of a third mutiny unfolding

Reports are emerging that Special Forces soldiers have fired gunshots into the air at a military base in the coastal city of Adiake, 90km east of Abidjan. The city of Adiake is home to a marine commando training base and a coastal surveillance centre. The soldiers are said to be demanding the same financial benefits which have been promised to other factions of the Ivorian security forces. One army spokesman has reportedly confirmed that shots were fired into the air, but did not specify whether or not a third mutiny was unfolding.

Earlier last month, Cote d’Ivoire was shaken by two mutinies which paralysed several major cities and left four people dead. Both mutinies ended when the government agreed to settle the mutineers’ financial demands.

Those operating or residing in Cote d’lvoire are advised to be aware of a possible third mutiny unfolding in Adiake, which could spread to other areas of the country. Previous mutinies have resulted in a short-term deterioration in the security environment and travel/service disruption in affected areas. Vacate an area at the first signs of unrest and follow the advice of local authorities.
