DRC: Flooding in Kinshasa Following Overnight Heavy Rain
Heavy flooding results in evacuations in Kinshasa
There are reports of flooding in parts of Kinshasa, following rainstorms on the night of 6-7 February, resulting in the Makelele and Kalamu rivers breaking their banks. Affected areas include La Gombe, Lingwala and central parts of the capital city. Some residents are reportedly stuck in their homes and others are being forced to evacuate. In 2016, over 10,000 people were made homeless by flooding across the country and dozens were killed.
Travellers are advised to check the state of the roads before travel and allow extra time for journeys. Follow the advice of the local authorities and move to higher ground if operating in a flood-risk area. Follow all directives issued by the authorities and maintain a flexible itinerary until the floods pass.
