Security has been increased and tightened in Cairo’s Zamalek neighbourhood, which is home to the Vatican Embassy, as well as near churches and monasteries in the capital city in preparation for the upcoming visit by the Roman Catholic Pope Francis. The Pope is planning to visit Egypt between 28-29 April. Islamic State have made clear their intent to target Coptic Christians in Egypt and have been responsible for several attacks on churches and cathedrals over the past months. Another attack or attempted attack during the Pope’s visit should not be ruled out.
Those operating or residing in Egypt are advised to be aware of Islamic State’s intent to attack Christians. Remain alert when visiting densely populated tourist or Christian destinations. Anticipate an increase in security force presence and avoid all large gatherings of people due to the credible threat of detention. Report any suspicious packages, behaviour or activity to the authorities and remain vigilant.
