Egypt: Increased Tensions as Food Prices Increase for Second Time in Three Months

Rising tensions in Egypt as food prices increase

Tensions are rising in Egypt, as the government increased the prices of subsidised sugar and cooking oil for the second time in three months, amid rising inflation and a struggling economy. The decision, made last week, increased the price of sugar by 14.3% and the price of oil by 20%. The move has been criticised by economists, who have said that the government had may other options before raising the prices of staple ingredients for a second time. Last November, Egypt suffered a sugar crisis which resulted in nationwide heightened unrest and increased tensions among the population. Following this latest decision, it is possible that further unrest and an anti-government sentiment may begin to increase. Protests and demonstrations could take place.

Those operating or residing in Egypt are advised to be aware of increasing tensions and a feeling of unrest, following a government move to increase food prices for a second time in three months. Protests and demonstrations should be expected. Avoid large gatherings of people, demonstrations and rallies, as protests can often turn violent in Egypt. Monitor local media for up to date information about any further development.
