Ethiopia: Fourth Attack on a Hotel Since January 2017

Five injured in fourth attack on a hotel since January 2017

At least five people have been injured after an unidentified assailant threw a hand grenade at the Lodge du Chateau hotel in Gondor on 24 April. No group claimed immediate responsibility for the attack. Earlier this month, on 1 April, there was an explosion at the Florida International Hotel in Gondar, reportedly the result of a grenade attack. Three people are said to have been injured. The attack follows two separate explosions at hotels in Gondar and Bahir Dar in January 2017.

Following the recent grenade attack at the Lodge du Chateau hotel in Gondor on 24 April and previous explosions at the Florida International Hotel in Gondar on 1 April, the Intasole hotel in Gondar on 10 January and the Grand Hotel in Bahir Dar on 4 January, those who plan to travel to or within Ethiopia are advised to be aware of the tense security environment. Avoid all travel to within 10km of border areas and the Danakil desert. Be aware of the potential for both indiscriminate lone wolf terrorist attacks and planned coordinated terror attacks to take place. Take particular care over when in proximity to densely populated tourist areas. Report any suspicious packages, activity or behaviour to the local authorities and remain vigilant.
