Islamic State attacker shot and killed after opening fire on a police officer on the Champs Elysee

On 20 April, a Kalashnikov-wielding terrorist gunned down a police officer and wounded two others in Champs Elysee in central Paris before he was fatally shot by police forces. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack hours after it took place and named the attacker as Abu Yusuf al-Beljiki, “the Belgian”. The attack took place just three days before a tense presidential election. It has been reported that the attacker had previously been labelled as an extremist and was known to the authorities. Emergency vehicles blocked the wide Champs-Elysees avenue and nearby subway stations were closed off. A second suspect, 39-year-old Karim Cheurfi, has handed himself in to the police in Belgium.

Those who plan to travel to or within France are advised to be aware of the latest terror attack. France has been the target of numerous Islamic extremist attacks in the past months/years and the country is on high alert.
