France: Man Shot at Orly Airport had Long Criminal History

Man shot dead at Orly airport suspected of having extremist links

On 18 March, a man was shot dead after at Paris’s Orly airport after attacking a soldier and trying to seize their rifle. Toxicology tests have shown that the man, Ben Belgacem, had consumed alcohol, cannabis and cocaine before he attacked the soldier. The man’s father has insisted that his son was not an extremist, but that his actions were caused by drink and drugs, stating “My son was not a terrorist. He never prayed, and he drank.” However, other sources believe differently, as when Belgacem grabbed the soldier at the airport, he put a rifle to her head saying he wanted to “die for Allah.” The attacker, who had also fired at police in a northern Paris suburb earlier that morning, was shot dead by two other soldiers. At the time of his death, Belgacem was carrying a petrol can in his backpack, as well as 750 euros in cash, a copy of the Koran, a packet of cigarettes and a lighter.

Those who plan to travel to or within France are advised to be aware of the latest possible terror incident. France has been the target of numerous Islamic extremist attacks in the past years and are on high alert. Report any suspicious packages, activity or behaviour to the local authorities and remain vigilant.
