German police have arrested two men, including a 29-year-old Syrian national during two large security operations on the southern outskirts of Leipzig in Saxony State on 4 May. The Syrian man is known to have fought with the Islamic State (IS) and Jabhat Fatah al-Sham (JFS) groups in Syria between 2012-2015. The identity of the second detainee was not immediately disclosed.
Those operating or residing in Germany are advised to be aware of the recent series of attacks to have taken place in the country. Muslim extremists and those who sympathise with Islamic State and Islamic State-linked elements are known to operate in Germany. Although the arrest does not pose a direct threat to travellers, travellers are nonetheless advised to remain aware and vigilant. Report any suspicious packages, activity or behaviour to the local authorities.
