Guinea: US Embassy in Conakry Issues Security Message
Five dead in violent clashes in Conakry
The US Embassy in Conakry has issued a security message to advise that demonstrations are taking place in Conakry, with unconfirmed reports of gunshots being fired into the air in Nongo and Kipe. Deadly clashes have also been reported during a protest against a teacher’s strike. At least five people have been killed, 30 injured and 12 arrested by security forces, after they reportedly used live ammunition against protesting youths in Bonfi and Enta. Roads may be blocked with little to no warning and there is a heavy police presence on the streets
Those operating of residing in Guinea are advised to exercise caution. Anticipate heightened security in Conakry. Leave the area if in the vicinity of a protest, due to the credible threat of escalating tensions and protest-related violence. Citizens and travellers are advised to remain inside until the situation normalises. Follow local media for more information and remain vigilant.
