Iceland: Volcano Eruptions Could Result in Travel Chaos

Possible volcanic eruptions may lead to travel chaos

With 130 volcanoes, both active and inactive, Iceland is one of the most intensely volcanic regions in the world. One expert has now warned that four of the country’s largest volcanoes – Katla, Hekla, Bárðarbunga and Grímsvötn – are about to erupt, which could result in travel chaos. The warning follows the 2010's explosive eruption of Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull, which caused more than 10 million air passengers to be stranded and cost the European economy an estimated £4 billion.

Travellers operating or residing in Iceland should be aware of the threat of a volcanic eruption and the associated disruptions to travel. Monitor local media for more information about the volcanoes and plan accordingly.
