India: FCO Warns of Violence and Arson
Ongoing instances of violence and arson in Darjeeling and Kalimpong
On 2 August, the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) issued updated travel advice for India, stating, “Following clashes with the police in Darjeeling on 12 June 2017, the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha has called for an indefinite shutdown of state government and Gorkhaland Territorial Administration offices. There are ongoing instances of violence and arson in Darjeeling and Kalimpong with sporadic violence in the Darjeeling foothills and in Cooch Behar district. If you’re planning to travel in or through the Darjeeling hills, Sikkim and Cooch Behar district, monitor local media, follow the advice of the local authorities, and keep in touch with your travel company.”
